Site upgrade in progress

28-Feb-09

Finally (YES! FINALLY!) I’ve managed to make some time to do the promised file-manager change and completely revamp the site. This is going to take a good couple of weeks but the site will be completely transformed and the new file system should be easier to navigate and help you find the CSVs you’re looking for. I also have more CSVs to add, and more on the way in.

When you hit the front page of the main site you should now see a temporary page, with links to the old file manager, this blog, and the forum. I’ll repeat those links below so you have another way in if you get completely lost.

If you find yourself on any other part of the site then you probably shouldn’t be there LOL

Updates will follow here as I get everything switched over.

Getting ready for the new file system

20-Aug-08

Hi folks,

It’s been a long time in the making but I’ve finally figured out how to set up this new file system to make it easier for everyone to use the site (including me!). In order to install this system I need to change one setting on the server to allow a particular function in PHP to run, but that’s not something I want to do on the server that the site currently runs on due to some other implications in changing this setting.

So, CSVHome.com is getting its own mini-serverĀ  Tongue

My guys are setting the server up now and we’ll move this site over there in the next day or so. Once that’s done I can test the new file system in the background for a few days and then start to install the live version. This will involve quite a bit of work as all the CSV files will need to be moved into a new directory structure, but it will mean that there will no longer be any need to log in to the system - The file system will be visible to everyone who visits the site. The front end of the site will also change to accommodate the new system.

I’ll update this post and the blog once there’s more info for you.

New setup and site moved

14-Apr-08

Hi All,

For those that didn’t notice the blog post on the OLD site, the site has now been moved to a new server in New Jersey USA. Having a share of the 8 mighty CPUs on this server, and some quality bandwidth, sure does make a difference!

And the good news is ….. I’ve finally found a file manager system that works for me, and probably will work better for you, because:

1) No more Ajax - This system is written in PHP
2) Full search capability - With luck you should be able to type in a part of a CSV filename, and find it easily
3) No more logins and passwords - Because the files are stored outside of the public path, I don’t need to worry about people hot-linking to files, so no more need for logins.

I’m currently ironing out a few bugs on a test site, but should be ready to start loading the new version here in the next week or two. So, please watch the BLOG, as I’ll post news there as things come to fruition :-)

Hello Singapore

10-Sep-07

csvhome.net is now live in Singapore, giving you the choice of 2 download sites, and me the peace-of-mind of having a complete site back-up in two very remote locations :)

I’ve also installed a script to keep the two sites syncronised, so any files I add to csvhome.com should automatically appear on csvhome.net within an hour or so.

It is still worth registering on both sites so that if there is a problem with one you can always still access the filebase on the other. The Singapore site actually has good connections to West Coast USA, so give both a try and see which one works out best for you.

And please, whilst I’ve given both sites a thorough workout, it’s you the users who are best at spotting my bloopers - If you spot anything that looks strange, please drop me a note through the contact form or let me know in the Forums.

Now to move csvhome.net

05-Sep-07

At the moment, csvhome.com and csvhome.net are hosted on different servers, but in the same datacenter in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Now that csvhome.com is fully populated with all the different categories of CSVs, I’m planning to move csvhome.net to a different datacenter and set it up as a mirror of the filebase on csvhome.com.

This means that if there’s ever a connection problem to csvhome.com in Georgia, at least csvhome.net will still be available, and vice versa.

One of my other servers, which just happens to be in Singapore, has plenty of space and bandwidth available on it, so csvhome.net will be moving south over the next 3 or 4 days, and will hold a copy of the same filebase as csvhome.com.

The Singapore datacenter actually has good connections into Europe, as well as the Asia/Pacific region, so you’ll be able to choose which site to download from, depending on where you are in the world.

I’ll be closing off the filebase on csvhome.net later today and I’ll let you know when the site has been moved and is ready to use so that you can test out connections to both sites and pick the one that gives you the best response.

Coming up next

03-Sep-07

Now that the filebase from csvhome.net is merged onto csvhome.com it’s time to add some more sections :)

Being added in the next 24 hours or so are a number of new sub-folders under the “Large Collections” section, including Doc-Ferret, DOT, Earl Miller, FemJoy, Foxes, Galitsin, Graphis, Larry Flynt, MPL, Oliver Klozov, Pix & Video, Score Group, Sj Scans, Softwoods, Twisty, Vulis, xLR8, zAlien and zFox.

That’s not the full list, but what I can remember up to now.

Still got problems registering?

01-Sep-07

In the user-base on CSVHome there still appears the occasional Hotmail or Yahoo! Mail user who never seems to get their registrations confirmed. I’m pretty sure that they wanted to register and didn’t just change their minds half way through the process, so here’s a couple of ideas about what could be going wrong:

Hotmail were one of the first bulk mail handlers to implement SPF Checking - a system used to counter “sender address forgery” (the way spammers “borrow” innocent mail addresses to send out their rubbish without getting identified). Both CSV Home sites have valid SPF records inserted in their DNS entries, so Hotmail now accept registration emails as valid mails when they get sent out from here during your registration process. However, to get that mail you still need to either whitelist both sites, or check your bulk-mail folders for the emails with the activation links in them.

Just in the last couple of weeks, Yahoo! Mail appear to have introduced a grey-listing system which basically can cause an email to go round the circuit twice (and thereby delay its arrival) - It’s a system they’ve introduced to validate the mail server sending the email by sending it straight back and asking the mail server to “try again later”. This can add a couple of hours onto the time it takes for the mail to reach your Yahoo! in-box. Again, you’ll still probably need to check your bulk-mail or Spamguard in-box for your registration mail.

Of all the big free bulk-mail handlers, GoogleMail appears to be the happiest when receiving our registration mails, so if you have a Google account it could well be worth using that and avoiding the issues described above.

Large Series CSVs are up

31-Aug-07

The large series CSV sets that were on csvhome.net are now in the new file manager.

Note that these will now be updated on csvhome.com so you’re more likely to find more recent files on there rather than csvhome.net.

CyberClub related files will be up later on csvhome.com, and then I’ll be updating some of the folders with additions I’ve received recently.

Old system going off

31-Aug-07

Now that all the CSVs that were in the old file system are now also in the new file system, I’ll be turning off the old system today so that I can make space for more CSVs.

Everything that is on csvhome.net is coming over to csvhome.com today and tomorrow, along with some additions and updates.

At last we’ll be able to get at everything on one site! :)
